BOARDMAN - The Riverside Pirates hosted Santiam Christian Eagles in a first round OSAA state soccer match on Tuesday afternoon. It was a blustery afternoon. The temperature was in the low 50s at game time with a wind that was gusting up in the mid 20s. Fans wore heavy jackets and some huddled under blankets at the time of the starting whistle.
The Pirates won 3-1. But the match started off slow as both teams adjusted play to the conditions. The wind pushed any shot east at the north goal. The ball tended to rise on any shot to the south goal. Riverside took something like 17 shots against the Santiam goal during the first half and just scored one goal. Santiam took seven shots on goal and only scored once in the first half.
Santiam Christian scored first during the first half. Jimmy Park's shot went pretty much up the middle for the goal at about the 10 minute mark. Kaz Dyer, the Santiam goalkeep, did an amazing job keeping Riverside from scoring during most of the first half.
Riverside finally scored their first goal in the 37th minute of the first half on a shot from the left side of the goal by Favian Madrigal from about five meters out.
Riverside controlled the second half with about thirteen shots on goal against only four for Santiam. The Pirates scored at about the 15 minute mark of the second half on shot up the middle by Iovani Barrera. Riverside picked two quick yellow cards around the 18 minute mark. Francisco Martinez scored the Pirates third goal at the 20 minute mark coming out of a group of players around five meters out from the goal.
Junior Iovani Barrera scored one of the goals in the game. How did the game go for you? "It felt really good. The wind affected the long balls somewhat. I'm ready for the next match."
Favian Madrigal scored the first goal for the Pirates. "It was pretty cold today. It was an exciting game. The wind was a problem going that way towards the north goal."
Francisco Martinez hit the final goal in the second half. The sophomore said that it "felt great playing in the wind."
"It took a little while to get warmed up then we got our game on."
One of the cheerleaders, Bernice, commented "It was great, awesome, exhilarating cheering for this crowd."
