BOARDMAN - The Riverside Lady Pirates lost to Sherman 38-37 on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.
The opening period was a low scoring one considering that Riverside came out strong in the first four minutes taking a 7-3 lead. The final four minutes of the period had both teams come up short in the scoring department. Amy Kegler of Riverside scored on a steal and layup for a 9-3 lead at the end.
Sherman used a pressure defense that slowed down the Riverside play in the second period. Riverside was held scoreless for the first two minutes of the period while Sherman tossed in five to close to a 9-8 score. Kayla Nelson and Jessica Bradley of Riverside had a good period helping to tie it up 16-16 after Sherman had taken a 15-12 lead with two minutes to go in the half. Kati King of Sherman hit a freethrow with 44 seconds to go to give the Huskies a 1 point lead 17-16.
Riverside found their range in the third period. Shannon Callow hit a three pointer, Kayla Nelson, and Jessica Donovan fired things up for the Pirates. Riverside held Sherman to two points in the last four minutes of the period.
Sherman came out strong in the fourth outscoring Riverside 6 to 3 in the first five minutes. Sherman's Karissa Mobley and Hayli Sharp hit three pointers. Kati King and Sonja Rhodes were successful from the foul line. Riverside held onto the lead until the 1:27 mark in the fourth when Rhodes hit a freethrow. From that point on Sherman held on to the lead for the 38-37 win.
