Umatilla Splits Doubleheader With Joseph

Umatilla won 8-2
Joseph won 13-3

UMATILLA - The Umatilla Vikings split a doubleheader with the Joseph Eagles on Friday, April 10, 2009. Umatilla won the first 8-2 and lost the second 3-13. Kasey Pankey was the winning pitcher for Umatilla in the first game. Pankey had good control and worked his pitches well. Aaron Trukositz was the loosing pitcher for Umatilla in the second game. Trukosit had problems with control and the Eagles had a number of successful hits in the second game.

First Game

Umatilla scored first in the bottom of the second inning when a long shot to center field by Taylor Pankey scoring Trukositz. That gave the Vikings the 1-0 lead.

Umatilla scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Steve Williams scored on a shot down the firstbase line by Kasey Pankey. Trukositz then blasted a long shot into left field which brought in a run. Next up Josh Wilson hit a homerun to deep center field scoring himself and Trukositz. Umatilla led at the end of the third inning 5-0.

Joseph scored their first run in the top of the fourth when an attempted pickoff of an Eagle on second base allowed the runner on third to score. Umatilla scored again in the bottom of the fourth on a hit to left field scoring a runner from second. Umatilla led 6-1.

Viking Aaron Trukositz blasted a homerun to right field giving Umatilla the 7-1 lead at the end of the fifth inning.

Joseph scored in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-2. Umatilla scored in the bottom of the sixth when a runner stole home on a wild pitch. That gave Umatilla winning run and the teams went scoreless in the seventh giving Umatilla the 8-2 win.

Second Game

The Joseph Eagles came out swinging in the second game of the doubleheader. Joseph loaded up the bases in the top of the first. Then with the bases loaded an Eagle batter blasted a grandslam over the center field fence. That shot gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Umatilla was able to score a run when a pass ball allowed the runner from third to score.

The next scoring came in the bottom of the third when a Viking scored on a pass ball from third base. That closed the score to the Eagles leading 4-2.

Joseph got the scoring machine going again in the top of the fourth inning. Umatilla loaded up the bases again with the first three batters. An Eagle hit a chopper to short allowing the runner on third to score. This gave Joseph the 5-2 lead. An Eagle popped out and with the bases loaded the next batter blasted a grandslam. That gave Joseph the 9-2 lead. Trukositz was pulled and Steve Williams was brought in to pitch for Umatilla. Williams walked an Eagle then allowed a homerun giving Joseph the 11-2 lead. Williams steakied himself and struck out the next two batters.

Joseph scored in the top of the fifth inning giving the Eagles the 12-2 lead. Umatilla scored a run on a hit to center field. Joseph led at the end of the fifth 12-3.

Joseph loaded up the bases in the top of the sixth. A batter being hit by a pitch drove in the last score for the Eagles. Umatilla had to score in the bottom of the sixth or the game would be over under the ten run rule. The Vikings went three up and three down giving the win to the Joseph Eagles. The final score was a win for Joseph 13-3.

Steve Williams of the Vikings was brought in in the middle of the fourth to stop the hemorrhaging of runs. He settled in and gained some control but Joseph had the momentum to win the second game. [img_2101]
