BOARDMAN - The Riverside Pirates defeated the Burns Highlanders 24-2 and 29-1 in a doubleheader on Friday, April 17, 2009. Burns has had a cold wind challenged spring season and they had their hands full with the powerfull Riverside team.
Game One
Burns scored first in the top of the first. That was their only runs in the first game.
Riverside scored seven runs in the bottom of the first with Shelby Drago, Kayla Nelson,
Brittney McCullough, Cherie Guenther Candice Grider and Jennah Mittelsdorf among the
scorers.
In the bottom of the third Pirates Kayla Nelson blasted a homerun to deep center field bringing in Shelby Drago and Jennah Mittelsdorf. Then came runs by Brittney McCullough, Jessica Bradley, Vicky Hernandez, Jennah Mittelsdorf and Cherie Guenther leading to a 15-2 lead by the Pirates.
The Pirates scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth as they batted around and then some. Hits by the Pirates drove in runs by Jordan Graff, Hernandez, Nelson, McCullough, Guenther, and Grider. The game ended in the fifth inning under the ten run rule, 24-2.
Game Two
By the start of the bottom of the third inning the Pirates led 9-1. Riverside batted around
nearly twice scoring ten runs in just one inning. Among the scorers were Shelby Drago,
Nelson, McCullough, Graff, Hernandez, Guenther, Ashley Town, Mittelsdorf, and Jessica Bradley.
This gave Riverside the 19-1 lead.
Riverside once again had an explosive bottom of the fourth inning. The Pirates scored ten runs taking a 29-1 lead. Pirate pitcher Britney McCullough took care of the Highlanders quickly in the top of the fifth giving the Pirates the 29-1 win in five innings under the ten run rule.
