UMATILLA - The Umatilla Vikings split a doubleheader with the Nyssa Bulldogs on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Nyssa won the first game 9-2. Umatilla won the second game 11-10. It was a good day for baseball after a week of a cold wind.
Game One
Nyssa controlled the game from the start with solid pitching and some good batting. Umatilla
was only down one run in the bottom of the second. That run came on a grounder by Taylor
Pankey which scored his brother Kasey. Nyssa led 3-2.
Nyssa scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs then scored three more in the top of the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Neither team was able to score again in the rest of the game.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader started off badly for the Vikings. They were down 7-0
with one out in the top of the second inning. It was another tough start for Aaron Trukositz.
Kasey Pankey came in and stopped the bleeding with a fly out to center field and a strike out.
Then the Vikings were able to score twice in the bottom of the second. Two Vikings scored
on a big shot to centerfield. Nyssa led at the end of two 9-2.
In the bottom of the third Umatilla's Steve Williams blasted a home run. A few minutes later the left handed Trukositz hit a shot to deep right field bringing in Kasey Pankey. Nyssa led at the end of the third 9-4.
The Vikings really came alive in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded Viking Kasey Pankey hit to centerfield scoring Hurley and Ash. Then Jacob Galbraith hit to the shortstop scoring Kasey Pankey. Later Justin Vandever hit to the shortstop scoring Trukositz. By the end of the fourth the score was tied 9-9.
Nyssa scored a run in the top of the fifth taking a 10-9 lead. Then in the bottom of the fifth Steve Williams scored on a Kasey Pankey hit to left field to tie it at 10-10.
In the bottom of the seventh with courtesy runner Tyler Anderson at second Steve Williams hit to deep left field. Anderson scored securing the 11-10 win for Umatilla.
