STANFIELD - The Stanfield Tigers defeated the Western Mennonite Pioneers on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 by the score of 5-3. The win means that the Tigers will travel to Portland for a Friday quarterfinal game with Portland Christian Royals at 1:00pm.

The winning pitcher for Stanfield was Quin Grogan who pitched the complete game. Grogan struck out ten Pioneers. Mike Fisher was Stanfield's catcher. The losing pitcher for the Pioneers was Luke Burkey.

Stanfield's Devin Bailey went three for three. Quin Grogan helped the cause by hitting an RBI double in the first inning.

Grogan struck out the first three Pioneers in the top of the first. Devin Bailey, Stanfield's lead off batter in the bottom of the first made it to first on a grounder. Mario Madrigal then laid down a perfect bunt advancing Bailey and beating out the throw to first. Mike Fisher then hit into a doubleplay. With Bailey at third Quin Grogan drove a hit deep into leftfield. That scored Bailey giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers came right back in the top of the second scoring their first run with the bases loaded and Bryan Hayes hit to deep rightfield scoring Geoffrey Martin from third. The next batter, Hayden Gutierrez, hit to deep rightfield scoring Sam Garber from secondbase giving the Pioneers the 2-1 lead.

The Tigers scored in the bottom of the third when Devin Bailey scored from thirdbase on a pickoff attempt at secondbase that tied the score at 2-2. A few minutes later with Mike Fisher on second and Mario Madrigal on third a wild pitch allowed Madrigal to score giving the Tigers the 3-2 lead. The Jack Taylor groundedout but drove in Fisher for a run. Stanfield led at the end of three 4-2.

Stanfield's next scoring opportunity occured in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers had Bailey on third and Madrigal on second. Taylor was at bat when a passball went all the way to the backstop allowing Bailey to score. Stanfield led at the end of the fifth 5-2.

The Pioneers worked themselves into what could have been a long inning in the top of the seventh. Western Mennonite had the bases loaded with no outs. Bryan Johnson went out and talked to Grogan. Grogan stayed in. A few pitches later a wild pitch allowed Hiroki Nishimura to score making the score 5-3. Then Grogan took control with Logan Mordhorst flying out. Then strikingout Sam Garber. Finally Jared Garza flew out giving the Tigers the 5-3 win and the trip to Portland Christian.

"I'm feeling confident right now." said Mario Madrigal after the game. "I'm hoping to pitch Friday against Portland Christian. I'm excited and ready to go."

"It felt good." said winning Stanfield pitcher Quin Grogan. "I came out wanting to pitch today. We came out pretty confident. Everyone wanted to hit. Once we all relaxed and settled in we did really well. I told coach Johnson that I wanted to go the whole game today."

Did he worry about loading up the bases in the top of the seventh? "I got a little worried but it's happened before and I've pulled through."
