HERMISTON - The Hermiston 11/12 year old softball team won it's first game of the Little League district tournament on Saturday by the score of 7-4. Hermiston defeated Hood River at a 11:30AM game.
Hermiston was the visitor in the game and went to bat first. Kalene Wheeler started things off with a hit to third base that she beat out. Next up Dayna Horn hit a shot to short right field. Marissa Crowe hit a grounder to short to fill up the bases. A wild pitch allowed Wheeler to score from third giving Hermiston the 1-0 lead. Elizabeth Weems hit to center field driving in Horn and Crowe and giving Hermiston the 3-0 lead.
Kalene Wheeler was Hermiston's starting pitcher. Hermiston was able to send the first three Hood River down with two groundouts and a flyout.
In the top of the second Jaycee Barron scored from third on a hit to rightfield giving Hermiston the 4-0 lead.
Hermiston next scored in the top of the third. Marissa Crowe scored from second on a bunt by Makenzie Juul to give Hermiston the 5-0 lead.
The next scores for Hermiston came in the top of the fourth. Wheeler scored from third. Then Horn scored from second on a grounder by Crowe. That gave Hermiston the 7-0 lead.
Hood River finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a hit to second driving a run from second. That made the score 7-1.
Hood River continued to score in the bottom of the fifth. With bases loaded a hit to left field drove in two runners. Then a hit to right brought in a runner. Hermiston's lead was cut to 7-4.
In the top of the sixth Hermiston went three up three down with two groundouts and a flyout. Closing pitcher for Hermiston Elizabeth Weems and her fielders took care of Hood River in the bottom of the sixth giving Hermiston the 7-4 win.
