HERMISTON - The Dalles 11/12 year old Little League baseball team defeated Bend South on Thursday, July 2, 2009. The Dalles won the championship game 4-2.

The Dalles led at the end of the first inning by a score of 1-0.

In the bottom of the second Bend South had Hunter McDonald, Nathan Miller and Chase Ricker on base. Tyler Peckham was at bat when a wild pitch let McDonald steal home tieing up the score at 1-1. A pop out to the pitcher and two strikeouts left two Bend South runners stranded on base.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth. Miller started off the fourth with a hit to right field. Ricker walked. The next two batter were struck out. Jacob Parsons hit a grounder to the pitcher who threw Parsons out at first allowing Miller to score from third. That gave Bend South the 2-1 lead.

The next scoring opportunities took place in the top of the sixth for The Dalles. Austin Keller started off the inning with a hit to center field. The next batter Eli Holeman hit to left field. Gordy Harris groundout but advanced the runners to second and third. Josh Keyser hit a grounder to short and looked like he was going to be an easy out but the firstbaseman for Bend South pulled his foot off the bag and Keyser was safe. That meant the bases were loaded. The Bend South coach pulled the pitcher Cody Anthony and replaced him with Hunter McDonald. Sage Bierwirth hit up the middle over second base and into center field. That scored Keller, HOleman and Keyser and giving The Dalles the 4-2. Jake Kortge flew out to the shortstop and that finished the top of the sixth.

The Bend South team knew they had score some runs and they started off the bottom of the sixth well. Chase Ricker hit a grounder to thirdbase and made it safe to first. Then Dylan Sallee hit to short right field. With runners on first and second Nicolas Hahn hit to the firstbaseman who tagged Sallee then tagged the base for a doubleplay. With Ricker on third Parsons grounded out second to first. The Dalles players and coaches jumped and ran together congratulating each other with handshakes and hugs.
