Hermiston Defeats Lewiston In Home Opener

HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs football team defeated Lewiston, Idaho in their opening home game of the season on Friday, September 11, 2009 by a score of 22-15. The temperature at kickoff was about 80 degrees.

The Lewiston took the opening kickoff and began play on their own 21 yard line. Lewiston ended up with fourth and eighth and forced to punt to Hermiston. Ten plays later Hermiston quaterback Faafiaula Ena connected with Adam Von Arx on a ten yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Ricardo Rodriguez was good giving Hermiston the 7-0 lead with 6:13 to go in the first quarter.

Lewiston was forced to punt when their drive fizzled on the 47 yard line. Hermiston took possession on their 22 yard line with 3:11 to go in the first quarter. A couple of penalties and only short gains left Hermiston with fourth and twelve and needing to punt. The long snap for the punt flew through the endzone giving the Lewiston two points on the Hermiston safety. That made the score Hermiston 7 and Lewiston 2.

Lewiston fumbled back to Hermiston on their second play following the kickoff after the safety with about 1:16 to go in the first quarter. The Dawgs couldn't get anything going and gave the ball over to the Bengals on downs.

The teams exchanged possessions through most of the second quarter. Lewiston took possession with 3:54 to go in the half. Nine plays later the Bengals scored on a 14 yard pass. The PAT was blocked. Lewiston took the 8-7 lead with 47 seconds to play in the half.

Lewiston took that 8-7 lead into halftime.

Hermiston took the opening kickoff of the second half. After eight plays the Dawgs were forced to punt. Four plays later the Dawgs took possession on downs with 6:05 to go in the third quarter.

A pass interference call against the Bengals placed Hermiston first and ten on the 12 yard line. After loosing four yards Hermiston went for a pass sitting second and sixteen. Ena connected with Mike Royer on a sixteen yard pass for the touchdown. The two point conversion was good giving Hermiston the 15-8 lead with 4:15 to go in the third quarter.

It didn't take long for Lewiston to score. On the third play of their possession Bengal quarterback Justin Podrabsky threw a 47 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and that tied the score at 15-15 with 2:58 to go in the third.

The score remained tied through out the rest of the third and most of the fourth quarter. Hermiston took over possession with 5:49 to go in the game. The Dawgs went on a long drive chewing up time and yards as they made their to the endzone. A couple of passes late in the drive brought Hermiston to the three yard line and a first and goal. On second and goal Ena scored for Hemriston on a quarterback keeper right up the middle. Hermiston took the 21-15 lead with the touchdown. The PAT was good giving the Bulldogs the 22-15 lead.

Lewiston tried to put a drive of their own together in the last two minutes of the game but came up short when on fourth and ten on the Hermiston 30 yard line Podrabsky threw an incomplete pass in the endzone. Hermiston took over with 27 seconds to play and ran the clock out. Hermiston won 22-15.
