STANFIELD - The Heppner Mustangs (18-5-4 overall) defeated the Stanfield Tigers (3-16 overall) in three straight games of volleyball on Thursday, October 8, 2009. The scores were 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11. Heppner showed a dominating team style that served them well in last year's fourth place at state team.
The first game started off fairly evenly. Stanfield tied it up at 4-4. Heppner pulled away to a 10-6 lead then Stanfield closed back to being down by one at 10-9. Then with the Mustangs leading 14-10 Jessica Hughes came into serve. Hughes served two aces and the Mustangs scored 11 straight points holding the Tigers scoreless for the rest of the game. Heppner won the first 25-10.
Jessica Hughes started off serving for Heppner in the second game. The Mustangs ran up a 10-0 score before Stanfield scores a point on a sideout. But Stanfield couldn't get a run of points going. Instead Heppner continued to score until the led 17-7. Even though Stanfield started scoring it was too little too late as Heppner cruised to a 25-15 win.
Heppner dominated the third game holding Stanfield scoreless until a sideout at 7-0. From that point on Heppner scored relentlessly, showing that they are once again one of the top teams in Oregon.
