STANFIELD - The Stanfield Tigers defeated the Elgin Huskies 54-14 on Friday, October 6, 2009. The Tigers will be traveling to play Scio on Saturday, November 11 in the first round of the state 2A playoffs. Many expected a much closer game since Stanfield and Elgin were tied at 4-2 in conference. That wasn't the case as the Tigers scored two touchdowns in the first four and a half minutes of the game and never looked back.

Stanfield took the opening kickoff and five plays later scored on a five yard run to the right by Jose Mancilla. The PAT was missed making the score 6-0.

Stanfield forced Elgin to go four and out with a punt to the Tigers. Four plays later the Tigers were first and goal on the two yard line when Derek Monkus handed off to Quinton Grogan. Grogan scored on the two yard touchdown with 7:37 to go in the first. The Tigers went for a two point conversion and it was good on a Grogan run. That made the score 14-0.

Elgin was forced to punt on their next possession. The punt was shanked right and Stanfield took over on the 48 yard line with 5:51 to go in the first quarter. Two plays later Stanfield was first and goal on the three yard line. Monkus handed off to Mancilla for the three yard touchdown. The PAT was good making the score 21-0.

Stanfield took the ball with 2:45 to go in the first quarter following an Elgin punt. Four plays later with a second and goal on the seven Monkus handed off to Quinton Grogan who ran it in for a touchdown. The PAT was missed making the score 27-0.

Stanfield next took possession of the ball at 9:56 of the second quarter on the 43 yard line. On third and nine on the 42 yard line Monkus threw a pass to Trevor Morris who ran it in for touchdown. The two point conversion was good making the score 35-0.

With 7:52 to go in the second quarter Stanfield took the ball on the 35 yard line. Five plays later on first and goal on the one yard line Monkus handed off to Corey Baros for a touchdown. The PAT was good giving Stanfield the 42-0 lead. Elgin moved the ball from their 29 yard line to the Stanfield 36 when they gave the ball over to Stanfield on a fourth and eleven with 42 seconds to play in the half. Stanfield played out remaining moments and took the 42-0 lead into halftime.

Stanfield got their first chance with the ball at 9:55 of the third quarter. The five play drive took the Tigers to the Elgin 27 yard line. Monkus handed off to Jose Mancilla who ran it along the left side for a touchdown. The PAT was missed making the score 48-0.

Elgin finally put together a scoring drive on their next possession. The five minute drive culminated in a three yard run by Dalton Moore. The PAT was missed making the score 42-6.

Stanfield started the fourth quarter with an eight play drive that ended in a 43 yard run by Brian Surber for a touchdown. The two point conversion was missed making the score 54-6.

Elgin came right back and scored a touchdown on a left sweep by Jared Harris. The two point conversion was good making the score 54-14.

Stanfield took the kickoff and ran off the remaining 4:11 in the game to take the 54-14 win. The win punched the Tigers ticket to the state playoffs. The Tigers will travel to the valley to play Scio on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
