HERMISTON - The Mountain View Cougars defeated the Hermiston Bulldogs 58-54 on Saturday, January 9, 2010. The undefeated Cougars came into a 5-5 Hermiston. Hermiston started out strong early in the game. Mountain View caught fire in the second period scoring 21 points to take the lead at halftime. Mountain View continued to overpower the Bulldogs throughout the third period. Hermiston battled back in the fourth period closing to within two points before the Cougars pulled away for the win.
Jesse Zapata of the Cougars scored first in the first period. Hermiston then scored 11 straight points before Mountain View hit their next shot with 3:18 to go in the period. Hermiston had three pointers by Joey Burns, Kurt Simmons and Alex Boedigheimer. Hermiston led at the end of the first by a score of 16-9.
The Cougars went on a scoring rampage in the second period. Big plays and three pointers were what worked for Mountain View. Isaiah Mitchell scored on a steal and layup for the Cougars. Then came treys by Mitchell and Zapata. Also scoring for the Cougars were Mark Claar and Seth Brent. Hermiston only scored five points in the second. Hermiston scored on freethrows by Ricardo Rodriguez and Austin Boedigheimer. Also Burns scored on a baseline drive. The Cougars led at halftime 30-21.
Mountain View outscored Hermiston in third 13-11 pushing the Cougar lead to 11 points. Even a technical foul against a Mountain View player didn't affect the scoring run for the Cougars. Bulldogs scoring in the third included Austin Boedigheimer, Ryan Ross, Alex Oriz-Chavez and Ricardo Rodriguez.
Hermiston came alive in the fourth scoring 22 points and closing to within two of Mountain View. Mountain View was no slouch scoring 15 in the fourth but the momentum had clearly swung to the Dawgs. Hermiston closed to within one point 53-54 with 10 seconds to play on a trey by Alex Boedigheimer. The Cougars scored on four freethrows in the final nine seconds to seal the win and keep their undefeated streak going. Top scorers for Hermiston were Alex Ortiz-Chavez with 11, Alex Boedigheimer and Austin Boedigheimer each with 10 and Trevor Phillips with 9. Mountain View's top scorers included Seth Brent with 19, Isaiah Mitchell with 12 and Mark Claar with 9.
