ECHO - The South Wasco Redsides defeated the Echo Cougars 56-51 in overtime on Saturday, January 9, 2010. South Wasco led at one point by 12 points and the Cougars clawed their way back to tie it up 50-50 at the end of regulation. Then came the four minutes of roof raising overtime that had the Echo crowd yelling and cheering their Cougars to what ended up being a tough loss.
South Wasco led throughout the first period with the score being 8-6 at the end of the first period.
Echo was able to increase their scoring in the second period. Back to back three pointers by Jacob Ely and Jorge Munoz early in the second to the Cougars to a 12-11 lead. The teams alternated the lead with South Wasco taking the 24-17 lead into halftime.
The Redsides continued to control the game during the third period but Echo did chip away slightly at the South Wasco lead. Jacob Ely had three treys during a personal eight point run he had in the middle of the period. Logan Thorn of the Cougars hit two shots and Weston Longhorn hit a followup layup to help close within six at the end of the third. South Wasco led 42-36.
Echo outscored South Wasco 14-8 in the fourth to tie the Redsides 50-50 at the end of regulation. Echo worked the fast break and pressure defense to force steals leading to scores. Echo's Logan Thorne tied it up 50-50 with 1:22 to go in the game.
The overtime was about ball control. The first score came at 1:08 on a freethrow by Glen Swanger of Echo. That gave Echo the 51-50 lead. Stephen Larlee of South Wasco tied then took the 52-51 lead on two freethrows with 22 seconds to go in overtime. Larlee then hit four more freethrows at 15 seconds and 2 seconds as Echo went to intential fouls in an attempt regain the ball.
South Wasco hit a blistering 46.7% of their shots. Echo hit 32.8 of their shots. The Redsides hit 10 of 20 freethrows. The Cougars hit 8 of 17 freethrows. Top scorers for South Wasco were Stephen Larlee with 30 points, Zac Hayes with 13 and Josh Duling with 9. Echo's top scorers included Jacob Ely with 20, Jorge Munoz with 10, Logan Thorne with 8, Weston Longhorn and Bryan Ibarra each had 4.
