UMATILLA - The Umatilla Vikings defeated the Vale Vikings 66-60 in overtime on Saturday, January 23, 2010. The game was one of those where the lead went back and forth. It was looking kind of bleak at the end of the third for Umatilla because Vale led by 14 with a score of 47-33. Umatilla scored 22 points in the fourth to tie the game and send it into overtime. Overtime started off tight but a series of fouls sent Umatilla to the line several times.
Umatilla raced to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the opening period. Vale used two three pointers to close the gap at the end of the period. Umatilla led 14-13 at the end of the first. Scoring for Umatilla int he first included German Campos, Kiko Campos, Jorge Campos, and Taylor Pankey.
The Vale Vikings outscored Umatilla 14-10 in the second period. Sage Ceniga hit two three pointers and a couple shots that helped to energize Vale. Vale led at halftime 27-24.
Vale came out smoking in the third quarter outscoring Umatilla 20-9 to take a 47-33 lead. Scoring for Vale came from Caleb Zemmer, Bryant Haueter, Steve Yraguen and Steve Hicks. Kiko Campos hit a few shots. Max Bedolla stole the ball and drove in for a layup which was followed by a jumper at the buzzer by Austin Bieren.
Umatilla avoided collapsing and turned things around outscoring Vale 22-8. Three pointers by Andres Sanguino (2), Juan Ayala, and Forrest McBride was over half of the points scored by Umatilla in the period. Also scoring for Umatilla were Kiko Campos, Jorge Campos on a steal and layup. The score was tied 55-55 with 23 seconds to go. Following two timeouts and with three seconds to go Joge Campos attempted a trey that missed sending the game into overtime.
Andres Sanguino hit a trey a minute into the overtime to give Umatilla the 58-55 lead. Taylor Pankey then scored for Umatilla making the score 60-55. Vale scored on a short shot to close to 60-58. Forrest McBride then scored to give Umatilla the 62-58 lead. Vale then hit a cutting Umatilla's lead to 62-60. Intentional fouls by Vale in the final twenty seconds sent Juan Ayala and Forrest McBride to the foul line. Ayala and McBride hit all four freethrows stretching the Umatilla lead to six. When the buzzer sounded Umatilla had come from 14 down at the start of the fourth to win by six at the end of overtime.
