UMATILLA - The Umatilla Lady Vikings defeated the Vale Vikings 40-35 on Saturday, January 23, 2010. The game was back and forth with the teams tied at the end of the first and Vale leading at halftime and the end of the third. It was only in the fourth that Umatilla took control outscoring Vale 15-7 to take the win.
Umatilla scored first following the opening tip taking a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. Scoring for Umatilla were Kassie Kennedy and Naomi Castanon. Vale came back with three scores by Brooke Hawkins to tie it up at 6-6. Catherine Routson then gave Umatilla the 8-6 lead. Shelby Mooney of Vale then stole the ball and scored on a layup to tie the score at 8-8 at the end of the first.
Vale pulled away from Umatilla in the second on treys by Mary Pozzi and Mooney. Umatilla was only able to score four points in the second period. Vale led at halftime 18-12.
Umatilla turned things around in the third outscoring Vale 13-10 closing the gap to three points. Scoring in the third for Umatilla came from Jessica Siler, Kassie Kennedy, Siler, Castanon, and Routson. Vale led 28-25.
Umatilla kept up the shooting in the fourth as they outscored Vale 15-7. Umatilla went ahead 33-32 on a steal and layup by Kassie Kennedy. Umatilla never gave up the lead after that. Scoring for Umatilla in the fourth came from Routson, Kennedy, and Siler. Umatilla won 40-35.
