STANFIELD - The Stanfield Lady Tigers defeated the Irrigon Knights 40-36 on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. It was a come from behind victory for the Tigers as they were 10 points down at the end of the third and scoring 25 points in the fourth period to overtake the Knights and take the win.
The Irrigon Knights started strong holding the Tigers scoreless in the first period. Staci Stanger scored first for the Knights. The Knights led at the end of the first 6-0.
Darshae Hunter scored for the Tigers in the opening 50 seconds of the second when she hit two freethrows. Leslie Coffman then scored for the Knights. Other Knights scoring in the second included Natalie Campos, Noelle Wright and Stanger. Tigers scoring in the second were Sterling Braithwaite, Nidia Ibarra and Allysa Sobotta. Irrigon led 16-10 at halftime.
The Knights continued to control the game in the third. The Knights outscored the Tigers 9-5. Leslie Coffman scored seven of the 9 points for Irrigon. Als scoring was Noelle Wright. Scoring for the Tigers came from Katelyn Zabansky, Sobotta and Ibarra. Irrigon led 25-15.
Irrigon was cruising along smoothly the entire game. Stanfield came up with play that allowed them to outscore the Knights 25-11 in the fourth. Stanfield began closing the gap in the first three minutes with scoring from Braithwaite and other to close to within 3 at 27-24. Irrigon pulled away over the next two minutes to take a 32-25 lead. The Tigers closed back in within a point on freethrows, a layup, and a three pointer by single handedly by Sobotta. With Irrigon leading 34-33 Coffman hit a short shot to stretch the lead to three. At the 1:25 mark Ibarra hit a jumper for Stanfield to close to one. Then at the 50 second mark Braithwaite of the Tigers hit a jumper to take the 37-36 lead. Emma Gabriel hit a freethrow to push the Stanfield lead to 38-36. Sobotta hit two freethrows with 22 seconds to go to push the Tiger's lead to 40-36. Irrigon tried to will a comeback but there was too little time and four points to overcome. Stanfield players burst into cheers as the final seconds counted off the clock.
