UMATILLA - The Umatilla Lady Vikings defeated the Riverside Pirates 37-22 on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. It was a low scoring defensively driven game.
The first period had a total of 13 points scored by the two teams. Riverside scored first on a jumper by Kayla Nelson. Nelson was the only scorer for Riverside in the first. Michelle Mendoza came back for the Vikings to tie it at 2 at 7:13 of the first then she nailed a freethrow to give Umatilla the 3-2 lead. Umatilla led the rest of the game even as neither team turned on the scoring. Scoring for Umatilla in the balance of the first were Ashley Vandever and Jessica Siler. Umatilla led at the end of the first 9-4.
Umatilla outscored Riverside 14-8 in the second. Vikings scoring included Catherine Routson, Naomi Castanon and Kassis Kennedy. Pirates scoring were Shannon Callow, Lidia Velazquez and Janiva Lomas. Umatilla led at halftime 23-12.
Riverside outscored Umatilla 8-6 in the third. But the Pirates scoring barely nicked the Vikings lead. Pirates scoring in the third were Jessica Bradley and Callow. Vikings hitting the basket included Routson, Mendoza and Siler. Umatilla led at the end of the third 29-20.
Umatilla held Riverside to just two points in the fourth outscoring the Pirates 8-2. The only Pirate to score was Whitley Reece. Vikings scoring came from McKenzie Montez, Routson, Castanon. Umatilla won 37-22.
