STANFIELD - The Stanfield Tigers defeated the Weston McEwen Tiger Scots 16-6 in six innings on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. It was a game dominated by an explosive 15 run fifth inning. The afternoon grew increasingly cloudy and breezy over the course of the game.
The Tigers started scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Devin Bailey led off with a base hit. Then Mario Madrigal walked. Trey Blevins hit a grounder to short which was bobbled and all runners were safe. Quinton Grogan then hit a shot to left field scoring Bailey and Madrigal. A couple batters later Trevor Morris hit to center field scoring Blevins and Grogan and giving Stanfield the 4-0 lead.
Weston McEwen got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth scoring a runner from third on a fly out to center field.
Stanfield led 4-1 when Weston McEwen had a hot inning in the top of the fifth. A grounder with runners on first and third scored the runner on third. Then a hit to deep left field scored another runner. The Tiger Scots closed the score to 3-4. Then with two on a hit 365 feet all the way to the deep center field scored three runs as it turned into an inside the park homerun. That gave Weston McEwen the 6-4 lead.
The top of the fifth was a pretty good inning for Weston McEwen but Stanfield ended up topping it. Trey Blevins led off with a walk. Quinton Grogan then hit to right field. That scored Blevins. Derek Monkus then hit to center field driving in Grogan. Trevor Morris then hit to right field scoring Monkus. Stanfield now led 7-6. Brandon Castro then hit a little roller that got him on base safely. Shaun Milbrodt then hit to right bringing in Morris and Castro and the stretching the lead to three, 9-6. An infield pop fly by Raul Mendola fell safely. Then Bailey bunted safely. A wild throw on an attempted pickoff allowed Milbrodt to score. That made the score 10-6. Blevins hit to left field scoring Mendola. Weston McEwen swapped pitchers. But Stanfield wasn't done scoring. Bailey scored on a passball. Then Grogan hit to deep center field bringing in Blevins. Monkus hit to right bringing in Grogan and giving Stanfield the 14-6 lead.
The next scoring in the bottom of the sixth. The weather had worsened - a light drizzle and increased wind made it feel like early February. Mendola led off with a hit to left field. Bailey got a walk. Madrigal walked. With Blevins at bat a pass ball allowed Mendola to score. Grogan was up next. He took the count to full. The last pitch was called a ball and his walk forced in Bailey. Bailey's run gave Stanfield the 16-6 ten run rule win. The win gave Stanfield an over 10-5 record and 3-3 conference record.
