IRRIGON - The Irrigon Knights defeated the Heppner Mustangs 11-1 in five innings on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. The win pushed the Knights overall record to 18-3 and their 2A SD 5 record to 11-1 with the win.
The Irrigon Knights scoring began in the bottom of the first inning. Marissa Stanger was hit by a pitch and took first base. Ariel Schock laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing Stanger to second base. Stanger moved to third on a ground out. With Stanger on third on the Heppner pitcher was called for an illegal pitch scoring Marissa Stanger and giving Irrigon their first run.
Irrigon players started connecting with the ball in the bottom of the second. Alisha Mego led off the inning with a grounder to short. Alicia Martin then walked. Staci Stanger then laid down a nice bunt to load the bases. Cheyenne McKenney then hit to left field scoring Mego and giving Irrigon the 2-0 lead. Marissa Stanger hit to right field driving in Martin and Staci Stanger and giving Irrigon the 4-0 lead. Ariel Schock then hit through the shortstop into left field scoring McKenney. With the Knights leading 5-0 Noelle Wright hit a shot down the third base line scoring Marissa Stanger and Schock. Irrigon led 7-0.
Heppner finally got on the board in the top of the third inning when a hit to center field scored a runner on second to make the score 7-1.
Alisha Mego led off the bottom of the third with a walk. Alicia Martin laid down a sac bunt pushing Mego to second. Staci Stanger then walked. Mego scored on a steal from third to make the score 8-1. Cheyenne McKenney hit to center field. Madisyn Cadek then hit to short center field scoring Staci Stanger. Irrigon led 9-1. Marissa Stanger then walked loading the bases for the Knights. Ariel Schock hit a grounder through the shortstop into left field allowing McKenney to score Irrigon's tenth run. Noelle Wright was able to get a walk with the bases still loaded forcing in Cadek and giving Irrigon the ten run lead, 11-1.
Irrigon rotated in some players over the next two innings. Heppner wasn't able to score any runs to cut into the Knights ten run lead. After Heppner's last at bat in the top of the fifth the game was called under the ten run rule. Irrigon won by a score of 11-1.
