HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs defeated the Madras White Buffalos 7-5 on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. It brought the season record in the IMC to 7-9 for the Dawgs. Hermiston has five more away games remaining in their schedule. The Dawgs overcame being down by three runs when Madras led 5-2 in the second inning. The game started under threatening skies and only a slight breeze. The weather worsened over the course of the first inning. Play continued as rain fell during the entire second inning. The rain ended by the middle of the third. The wind had picked up and thunder could be heard in the distance occasionally.
Madras led off scoring in the first inning. Their lead off batter got on base with a hit to left field. Moments later a hit to deep left field drove in the runner on second base to take a 1-0 lead.
Hermiston's lead off batter in the bottom of the first was Andrea Waters. She was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Paxton pushed Waters to second. A shot to deep center field by Hanna Findley drove in Waters and tied the score at 1-1. Paige Long hit a grounder to short scoring Findley giving Hermiston the 2-1 lead.
Madras came up big in the top of the second when one of their batters blasted a home run deep over the center field fence scoring three runs to take the 4-2 lead. Moments later another batter crushed a home run to stretch the Madras lead to 5-2.
The rain was really falling making the notes difficult to read but here's what happended. . .Courtney Howard led off the bottom of the second with a grounder that she beat out to first. Then came a walk by Megann Galloway. Maloree Moss then connected for a hit driving in Moss and closing the gap to 5-3. Jennifer Paxton then hit to right field to load the bases. Paige Long hit to center field scoring Galloway and Moss that tied the score at 5-5. Gracie Flyg then hit to center field scoring two runs Paxton and Long and giving Hermiston the 7-5 lead.
Both teams got runners on base over the next five innings. Both teams even loaded the bases several times. But there was no more runs scored. The rain was done, there was a steady breeze and the infield was somewhat muddy. There was no lack of hits being made but most ended up being fly outs to the outfield or short popups. Hermiston did a nice job to win the game with Madras.
