BOARDMAN - The Grant Union Prospectors swept the Riverside Pirates 4-2 and 6-2 in a doubleheader on Friday, May 14, 2010.
Game 2
Riverside looked really strong in the second game until two out int he top of the sixth inning.
At that point Grant Union scored five runs to take a commanding lead. But let's go back to the
start of the second game to see how it got to this situation.
Grant Union got the board first in the top of the second inning. A hit to left field drove in a runner on first giving the Prospectors the 1-0 lead.
Riverside got their offense going in the bottom of the third. Stephanie Torres hit to center field. Then Lidia Velazquez laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Torres to second base. Shelby Drago then hit to deep center field driving in Torres and tying the score at 1-1. Kayla Nelson then walked joining Drago on base. Cindy McLaughlin then hit to left field scoring Drago and giving Riverside the 2-1 lead.
Grant Union was the next team to score int he top of the sixth inning. The Prospectors got a runner on base with a hit to left field. Then came a flyout and then the next batter hit into a throwout of the lead runner at second. Then Grant Union's batters started connecting with the Riverside pitches. First came the tieing run on a long fly ball. Then came a hit to right field driving in the third run. With the score 3-2 Grant Union then hit to left field driving in a run. Then a batter hit to center field scoring another run and taking the 5-2 lead. Finally a base runner stole home to give Grant Union the 6-2 win.
Riverside was able to get some runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't come up with a score.
The 6-4 in 3A Eastern Oregon and 12-12 overall Riverside Pirates will be playing a state playoff game on Tuesday, May 25, 2010.
