IRRIGON - The Irrigon Knights defeated the Blanchet Catholic School Cavaliers 8-5 in OSAA second round 2A/1A softball action. The Knights will be traveling to Enterprise for a 2:00PM quarterfinal game on Friday, May 28, 2010. The win takes the Knights record to 20-3 overall and 11-1 in SD5.
The teams exchanged the lead several times until Irrigon finally took control of the game in the fifth inning.
Blanchet Catholic School started off the top of the first with a slap shot by Allie Butterfield that got her to first base. Kaitlin Counts then laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing Butterfield to second base. Butterfield then stole third. Sami Belleque then bunted allowing Butterfield to score giving the Cavaliers the 1-0 lead. Makayla Hari then hit to center field driving in Belleque and making the Cavalier lead 2-0.
Irrigon scored in the bottom of the first. Ariel Schock led things off with a chopper that got her on base. Marissa Stanger pushed Schock on to second with a groundout. Noelle Wright flew out which allowed Schock to score from third cutting the Cavaliers lead to 2-1.
The next scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth inning. The lead off batter for Irrigon, Noelle Wright, blasted a home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 2-2. Leslie Coffman then hit to center field making it to first base. Jessica Henrichs then hit a ground out pushing Coffman to second base. Freshman Madisyn Cadek then hit to right field driving in Coffman to give Irrigon the 3-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth Amanda Weathers of Blanchet led off with a walk. Next Katelyn Ditzler hit to right field. With runners on second and third Allie Butterfield hit a chopper to short. Coffman fired a throw to home where Staci Stanger tagged Weathers out. Kaitlin Counts then hit to short center field driving in Ditzler and Butterfield giving the Cavaliers the 4-3 lead.
Irrigon came right back in the bottom of the fifth. Lead off batter Alicia Martin was hit by a pitch. Ariel Schock then bunted down the third base line cleanly. Marissa Stanger then hit a grounder down the third base line to load the bases. Noelle Wright then hit a grounder that the fielder chose to throw home and force out Martin. Leslie Coffman then hit a grounder scoring Schock and tieing it up at 4-4. Marissa Stanger stole home to give Irrigon the 5-4 lead. Alisha Mego then hit scoring courtesy runner Amber Kramer. An overthrow then scored Coffman the two runs giving Irrigon the 7-4 lead.
The next scoring occured in the bottom of the sixth inning. Irrigon's Cheyenne McKenney led off the inning with a grounder safe at second after the throw went out of play. Ariel Schock then got on base with a grounder. Marissa Stanger then hit a fly to center field scoring McKenney and giving Irrigon the 8-4 lead.
Allie Butterfield got on base for the Cavaliers in the top of the seventh with a grounder. A long fly by Sami Belleque scored Butterfield from second base. That was it for scoring by the Cavaliers and Irrigon won by the final score of 8-5.
