IRRIGON - The Irrigon Knights defeated the Weston-McEwen TigerScots 5-0 in a 2A semifinal state playoff game on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The Knights now move on to play Pilot Rock at 2:30PM on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Irv Lind Stadium at Portland State University in Portland.

The weather was overcast with the temperature topping at 70 degrees but cooling off as the afternoon went on.

Irrigon senior pitcher Noelle Wright had a good day striking out eleven TigerScots over the seven innings.

The teams started out slowly with the Knights scoring the first run in the third inning. The Knights second batter in the third Ariel Schock hit down the third base line and made it to second base. Two batters later Noelle Wright hit to deep right field driving in Schock for Irrigon's first one. Irrigon led 1-0.

The next scoring came in the bottom of the fifth. Alicia Martin led off with a hit down the third base line. Ariel Schock then laid down a perfect bunt to get on base. A batter later Noelle Wright walked to load the bases. Leslie Coffman hit a grounder to third base. The TigerScot thirdbaseman Rilei Hill fired to home get Martin. The bases were still loaded when Alisha Mego walked forcing in Schock and Irrigon took the 2-0 lead. Courtesy runner Amber Kramer then scored on a pass ball to push the Knights' lead to 3-0. Jessica Henrichs then hit to right field scoring Coffman and Mego and giving Irrigon the 5-0 win.

The Irrigon players showed some emotion following the game.

"It felt better than last time." said Irrigon senior Jessica Henrichs following the game. "We're a different team - more character - trying harder." She says her knee is good. Jessica plans on going to Clackamas Community College.

Noelle Wright was smiling ear to ear after the game. The win "Feels pretty good." Noelle also sees the bigger picture - she knows there's only one game remaining in her high school career and the days are counting down to the graduation ceremony. If she's nervous about all these things it doesn't show in her play. She won't have to worry about missing graduation - the ceremony is Thursday at 6:30PM. "I'm excited we get to play Pilot Rock. Hopefully we will be able to defend it." Noelle is looking at moving on to Concordia or Western Oregon for her college years.

Senior catcher Staci Stanger was standing there smiling as looked out onto the field. "It feels very good. Wonderful. We're going for another one." Staci is looking to go to Finlandia University in Michigan. Her major is early childhood education.

The win means the Knights will be travelling to Portland to defend their 2009 2A championship at Irv Lind Stadium at PSU. The game is scheduled for 2:30PM on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
