Umatilla Tennis Invitational Tourney

UMATILLA - Tennis players from area schools traveled to Umatilla & Hermiston for the Umatilla Men's Invitational on Saturday, April 23, 2011. Scott Stroud of Sherman County won the men's singles title. Anthony Martinez and Kevin Ochoa of MacHi in Milton-Freewater won the men's doubles title. The team champion was Mac High of Milton-Freewater with 35 points. Sherman County was second with 26 and Umatilla was third with 15 points.

Twenty men competed in the first matches of the men's singles tournament. The final came down to Daniel Winn of Weston McEwen vs. Scott Stroud in the final. Stroud won 6-0, 6-2.

"Scott Stroud from Sherman County" began Umatilla coach Keith Gerbers' observation of the singles matches, "was dominant and showed why he is at the top of the league."

Twelve doubles teams competed in the tournament. As the teams worked their way through the bracket MacHi teams showed their dominance in win after win. The final came down to two MacHi teams, Anthony Martinez/Kevin Ochoa and Luis Alvarez/David Camarena. Martinez/Ochoa won 6-3, 6-3 to take the championship.

Umatilla coach Keith Gerbers had a nice observation on MacHi in the tournament, "Man for man Mac High has the best team in the league and are lead by Tony marinez. I have enjoyed very much watchin him over the past four years and think hus game is as good as anyone in the league."
