IRRIGON - The Irrigon Lady Knights split a doubleheader with the Echo Cougars on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Irrigon won the first game 6-4 and Echo won the second game 11-4.
Irrigon scored first in the bottom of the first of game 1. After the first two batters flew out Alisha Mego walked. Cheyenne Garrett then hit to deep centerfield driving in Mego for the first score of the game. Irrigon led at the end of the first 1-0.
Echo had a good top of the second inning. Rachel Round led off with a hit to left field. Next up Emma Gabriel hit safely to left field. With Round and Gabriel on second and third Allysa Sabotta hit to center field scoring Round and tieing the score at 1-1. Marrisa Shockman then hit to center field scoring Gabriel. Mickie Kordasky then hit to second and the ball was overthrown scoring Sabotta. Echo led at the end of the second 3-1.
The next scoring in the game in the bottom of the fourth. Cheyenne McKenney of Irrigon hit a little roller that was bobbled allowing her to get to first safely. Ashli Roberts then hit safely down the right field line. Sandra Vera hit to centerfield scoring McKenney cutting the Echo lead to just one at 3-2.
Irrigon scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first two batters went out. Cheyenne Garrett hit to deep center field. Cheyenne McKenney then walked. Ashli Roberts then hit to center field scoring courtesy runner Amber Kramer to tie it up at 3-3. Sessa Gilman then walked. Sandra Vera then hit to deep center field scoring both McKenney and Roberts. Sessa Gilman also scored for Irrigon. Irrigon led at the end of the fifth 6-3.
Meagan Bailey led off the top of the sixth for Echo with a hit to right field. Rachel Round laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Bailey to second. Bailey then stole third and home. Irrigon led at the end of the sixth 6-4. Neither team scored in the rest of the game. Irrigon won 6-4.
Recognizing Irrigon Senior Cheyenne McKenney
Cheyenne McKenney, the lone senior player for the Irrigon Knights, was recognized in a ceremony between games in the doubleheader on Saturday. Her grand father was there as Cheyenne was all smiles accepting flowers from team mate Alisha Mego.
Echo had a big inning in the top of the first of game two. The Cougars scored 7 runs to take a dominating early lead. Vanessa Herrea led off the top of the first with a hit to short right field. Alisen Neasham then followed with a walk. Meagan Bailey then hit to right field scoring Herrera. Allysa Sabotta then hit to left field scoring Neasham and Bailey. Emma Gabriel then hit to deep left field scoring Sabotta. That gave Echo the 4-0 lead. Sterling Braithwaite then hit to short who went to third with the throw but the runner was safe. Rachael Round then hit to center field scoring Gabriel and Braithwaite. That made the score 6-0. Round then scored on a ground out giving Echo the 7-0 lead halfway through the first inning.
Echo continued to score in the top of the second inning. Meagan Bailey got on base with an infield grounder. She was replaced by courtesy runner Naomi Sherbahn. Allysa Sabotta then hit down the left field line. Emma Gabriel then hit down the left field line scoring Sherbahn and Sabotta. Echo led 9-0 half way through the second inning. Irrigon got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Ashli Roberts led off the bottom of the second with a walk. Sessa Gilman then hit to deep left field scoring Roberts. Then with Gilman on third and Cadek on second Marissa Stanger hit to left field scoring Gilman. Echo led a the end of the second 9-2.
Echo scored in the top of the fourth when Allysa Sabotta hit to center field scoring Meagan Bailey. Echo led at the end of the fourth inning 10-2.
Irrigon scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cheyenne Garrett hit to left field. Caitlin Hearn came in as a courtesy runner. Cheyenne McKenney then hit scoring Hearn. Sessa Gilman then hit down the third base line scoring McKenney. Echo led at the end of the fifth by the score of 10-4.
Echo scored in the top of the sixth. Meagan Bailey hit to center field for a triple. Then while Allysa Sabotta was at bat Bailey stole home on a pass ball. Neither team scored in the rest of the game. Echo won the second game of the double header 11-4.
