IRRIGON - The Pilot Rock Lady Rockets defeated the Weston-McEwen Tiger Scots 4-3 for the OSAA Special District 5 Softball Championship on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The day was cool, blustery and ranged from a light drizzle to steady rain. The temperature hovered between 55 and 60 degrees. The first half of the game was the steady rain portion of the day. The notes for this game became soaked and some sections became unreadable.
Pilot Rock scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Gambill led off the bottom of the first with a walk. She worked her way to third during two batters. Gambill stole home from third while AmyLee Perrine was at bat. Pilot Rock led at the end of the first 1-0.
Weston-McEwen scored in the top of the third inning. Morgan Entze hit to centerfield. Entze then stole secondbase. The batter following Entze then hit to right field driving in Entze. Entze's run tied the game at 1-1.
Pilot Rock then scored in the bottom of the fourth. AmyLee Perrine led off with a walk. Then Piper Carstens hit safely and was replaced by courtesy runner Brooke Wilson. Taylor Wilson then hit a single to load up the bases. Kylee Jensen then hit a grounder to the thirdbaseman who fired it home for the force out. Heather Fizpatrick then hit a groundout to second that allowed Wilson to score from third. Pilot Rock led at the end of the fourth 2-1.
Pilot Rock scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first two batters went down on an out at first and a flyout. The third batter, Liz Willingham, walked. Next AmyLee Perrine walked. Piper Carstens then hit a double to left field driing in Willingham and Perrine to give Pilot Rock the 4-1 lead.
Weston-McEwen made a strong comeback in the top of the sixth inning. Morgan Entze led off with a walk. A sac bunt pushed Entze to second base. A bunt by Molly vonBorstell pushed Entze to third base. A groundout by Haley Freske drove in Entze for the score. Then Claire Ely hit to centerfield scoring another run. Pilot Rock helf onto the lead in the middle of the sixth 4-3.
Weston-McEwen put a runner on base in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't get her around to score. Pilot Rock won the Special Distric 5 Softball Championship and will go on to the OSAA state tournament.
