HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs defeated the Pendleton Bucks 3 sets to 2, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 15-8 on Thursday, September 29, 2011. Pendleton easily handled the Dawgs in the first two sets. But things changed in the third set as Hermiston took control early and held on as the Bucks tried to claw back to take the lead. The fourth set was close until near the end and Hermiston dominated the fifth and deciding set. Dawgs having a good match included Crystal Schmidt, Gracie Flyg, Maloree Moss, Callahan Crossley and Cheyanne Lawson.
The first set started off with Hermiston going out to a 8-4 lead. Pendleton battled back to tie it at 9-9. Pendleton took the lead and Hermiston was unable to take the lead back. Even though the Dawgs couldn't win the set they still had big kills by Cheyanne Lawson, Maloree Moss, Crystal Schmidt, and Gracie Flyg. Callahan Crossley served up an ace in the first.
The second set was a back and forth one with the teams tied or exchanging the lead four times. Crystal Schmidt showed that she is both a finess player and a power player by hitting three dinks and three kills. Also scoring on kills were Maloree Moss and Gracie Flyg. Hermiston made a run for the win at the end of the set but came up two points short as Pendleton won 25-23.
Hermiston took control right from the start in the third set. The Dawgs led 18-11 at one point. The Bucks battled back towards the end of the set tieing it up at 19-19, 21-21 and 22-22. But Hermiston held on as Mikaela Cain-Anderson served up an ace and Flyg scored on a kill to help Hermiston win the third set 25-22.
Hermiston won the fourth set by six, 25-19. It was a very tight match with the teams tied or exchanging the lead ten times. Hermiston took the lead with the Dawgs barely leading 17-15. Courtney Howard served for a run of four points including a service winner that gave Hermiston the 20-15 lead. Hermiston then cruised to the fourth set win. Crystal Schmidt unofficially hit five kills.
With the teams tied at two all the matched moved onto a first to 15 fifth set. Hermiston dominated the fifth scoring the first four points before Pendleton could get a sideout. Maloree Moss then served for a run of four points giving Hermiston the 10-2 lead. The teams exchanged serves with Hermiston gaining three points to lead 14-6. Pendleton then served to the Dawgs and Crystal Schmidt smashed the winning shot to give Hermiston the 15-8 set win and 3-2 match win.
