BOARDMAN - The Irrigon Knights defeated the Riveride Pirates in three sets, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-14 on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
The first set started off with the teams echanging the lead with almost every sideout. Then Irrigon won serve while down by one point at 10-11. Irrigon's Alisha Mego then went on a four point run of serve including an ace take the Knights to a 14-11 lead. A few minutes later Ana Carmona went on a five point run of serve that included an ace. The Knights were able to hit three kills and three aces. There were several long volleys that were exciting to watch. Irrigon led at that point 23-14. Irrigon then continued on to win the first set 25-17.
The second set had the teams exchanging the lead several times all the way to being tied at 17-17. Once again Aliha Mego was at serve as Irrigon broke through the tie to score five points and take the 20-17 lead. During Riverside's Tiana Olvera's run at serve she hit three winners in a row that brought a roar from the crowd. The Knights held the lead for the rest of the set to win 25-22.
Riverside took the early lead in the third set running up a 6-2 lead. Nathalie Campos then came into serve for Irrigon for a run of five points serving that included two aces. A big kill came from Brandy Hoffman. That run of scoring gave Irrigon the 11-6 lead. Irrigon held onto the lead even as Riverside closed to within three at one point. In the second half of the set Irrigon outscored Riverside 10-2. The Knights won the third set 25-14.
