Umatilla Defeated Riverside

Umatilla won 42-24

BOARDMAN - The Umatilla Vikings defeated the Riverside Pirates 42-24 on Friday, October 28, 2011. It was a mild evening for late October with temperatures in the high fifties. The final score gives the impression that it was a type of blowout. However, Umatilla only led by two, 26-24 with six minutes to play in the game. The Vikings then made two quick scores stunning the Pirates.

Umatilla scored first on a big play at 10:22 of the first quarter. The PAT was blocked giving Umatilla the early 6-0 lead. Riverside came right back and scored a touchdown in two plays. The big touchdown run by Erik Carranz tied the score at 6-6. Omar Murillo scored the two point conversion giving Riverside the 8-6 lead.

The teams exchanged the ball until Umatilla took possesion with 1:51 to go in the first. Umatilla put together a four play series that ended with a six yard run. The two point conversion was missed. Umatilla led 12-8 with 21 seconds to go int he first quarter.

The teams had several long possesion but they ended in punts or interception. Umatilla led at halftime 12-8.

Umatilla's scored first in the second half following a punt from Riverside. Taking the ball on the 50 yard line the Vikings scored in just three plays. Umatilla scored on a 29 yard pass to Justin Vandever. The PAT was good giving Umatilla the 19-8 lead with 9:02 to go in the third quarter.

Riverside's next score when Umatilla was set up for a punt deep in their own territory on about the 8 yard line. The punt was blocked and rolled into the endzone for a safety. That cut Umatilla's lead to 19-10. Riverside took the kick from Umatilla and put together a ten play series for a touchdown. Riveriside scored on a one yard quarterback keeper with 1:41 to go in the third quarter. The two point conversion was missed. Umatilla's lead was cut to just three, 19-16.

Umatilla took possesion of the ball and put toegether a ten play series that spanned the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter. The touchdown for the Vikings came on a 3rd and 5 on the 24 yard line pass play. Andreas Sanguino completed a pass to Justin Vandever. The PAT was good giving Umatilla the 26-16 lead.

Riverside took the kickoff with 10:04 to go in the game and put together an nine play series. Briton Hansen ran it from the five yard line for the touchdown. Hansen then followed up running it in the two point conversion. The scored cut Umatilla's lead to 26-24 with just 6:10 to play.

Umatilla then scored in a five play series that ended in a 38 yard run by Emanuel Chavez. The Vikings then set up for a PAT then ran the ball in for a two point conversion. That gave Umatilla a ten point lead, 34-24 with 4:10 to go in the game.

Riverside then had their first play of their possesion intercepted by Umatilla. The Vikings put together a seven play touchdown drive. Emanuel Chavez scored the touchdown on a nine yard run. Chavez then scored the two point conversion. That gave Uamtilla the 42-24.

Riverside's possesion fizzled out with another Umatilla pass interception with only 1:12 to play. Umatilla ran out the clock and took the 42-24 win.
