HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs defeated the Milwaukie Mustangs 3-0 with set scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 25-15 in the OSAA 5A state play in game on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The Bulldogs had excellent play by seniors Gracie Flyg, Maloree Moss, Crystal Schmidt, Cheyanne Lawson and Jeni Hoffert.
The opening minutes of the first set were evenly played with the teams tied at 2-2 and 5-5. Then Cheyanne Lawson went on a nice run of serve for the Dawgs stretching the lead to 13-5. Crystal Schmidt nailed two kills during this time. Hermiston controlled the set after that stretching to a ten point lead at one point. Crystal Schmidt unofficially had five kills, for the Dawgs. Alson hitting kills for the Dawgs were Gracie Flyg and Cheyanne Lawson. Hermiston won the set 25-15.
The second set was more competitive with Hermiston finally tieing Milwaukie at 24-24. Milwaukie started off the set with a 7-2 lead under the serve of Alina Munoz-Licea. Hermiston battled for sideouts only to have Milwaukie win the point. The Dawgs finally closed to within two, 13-15. Hermiston shadowed the Mustangs until Gracie Flyg took the serve with Milwaukie leading 24-21. Hermiston used the full range of their abilities including dinks and a shoot to tie it up at 24-24. Two tough points later Hermiston took the second set with a 26-24 win. Crysatal Schmidt had four kills, Cheyanne Lawson and Gracie Flyg each had two kills.
The Dawgs took control of the third set fairly early after being tied 2-2. Hermiston led the rest of the third set. Crystal Schmidt had four kills. Maloree Moss had an ace. The Dawgs led by twelve at one point of the set. Hermiston won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Hermiston will play Wilson next in the OSAA 5A state playoffs.
