BOARDMAN - The Riverside Pirates defeated the Illinois Valley Cougars 12-0 in OSAA 3A playoff soccer action on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. It was a sunny day with the temperature 52F degrees and a light breeze. The Pirates dominated shots on goal, out shooting Illinois Valley 4 to 1. Seven Pirates scored goals - Francisco Velazquez with two, Erik Ruiz with one, Jose L. Rodriguez with one, Jovanny Llamas with six goals, Jose Flores with one, and Ignacio Zuniga with one.
Riverside spent the first seven minutes or so sizing up the Illinois Valley team. No big offensive push jsut testing the strength of the defense and goalkeep. Then in the ninth minute of play Francisco Velazquez made his way up the middle of the box and shot around his defender crushing the ball into the net for the first goal for the Pirates.
Two minutes later on a nice drive and pass Erik Ruiz of Riverside scored the Pirates second goal in the 11th minute. One minute later Francisco Velazquez his second goal giving the Pirates the 3-0 lead.
Six minutes later, Riverside's Jose Rodriguez scored on a rebound off the crossbar following a flurry of action in front of the net. Riverside led 4-0 in the 18th minute. About a minute later Jovanny Llamas of Riverside scored on a header from the middle of the net. Riverside led at that point 5-0.
The next Riverside goal came with just seconds to go in the first half on a shot by Jose Flores. Riverside led at halftime 6-0.
Riverside started the second half much as they have over the season - by sizing up the play of Illinois and driving deeper into the zone testing the defense. In the seventh minute Ignacio Zuniga scored off a shot from the left side. That goal gave the Pirates the 7-0 lead.
Seven minutes later in the 14th minute Jovanny Llamas went on a tear scoring the first of five goals in row. Llamas' first goal of the second half came on a drive up the middle. That stretched the Pirates lead to 8-0. Llamas next goal came on another drive up the middle in the 25th minute. Riverside led by 9-0. About a minute later Llamas scored from about 10 yards out to give Riverside the 10-0 lead.
Things slowed down until the final minute of the match. Jovanny Llamas scored a header off a centering pass. Then about 30 seconds later Jovanny Llamas closed the match with a goal with three seconds on the clock. That goal capped the Pirates 12-0 win.
