HERMISTON - The Sherwood Bowmen defeated the Hermiston Bulldogs 1-0 in the first round of the OSAA 5A mens soccer playoffs on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. It was a chilly evening with the temperature dropping into the 40s as the game progressed. A haze hovered about 20 feet over the field.
The first half was scoreless but most of the action took place in front of the Hermiston goal. Sherwood was able to control the ball and put some pressure on the Dawgs' goalkeep. Sherwood unofficially took over 20 shots on goal to around five shots by Hermiston. The Bulldogs battled hard but had difficulty even getting through the Bowmen defenders to get close to the Sherwood goal. The first half ended tied 0-0.
Hermiston picked up the pace in the second half breaking into the Sherwood zone with some regularity. But Sherwood came up with a scoring opportunity in the 20th minute of the second half when they were given a free kick. The set piece by Sherwood led to a kick in the left corner good for the 1-0 lead. Hermiston turned up the heat in the last 20 minutes driving repeated into the Sherwood zone only to have the shot blocked or kicked wide. As the clock ticked towards the end Hermiston tried even harder to score but came up empty. When the buzzer sounded Sherwood took the 1-0 win.
