BOARDMAN - The Goldendale, Washington Timberwolves defeated the Riverside Pirates 60-52 on Saturday, January 7, 2012. The nonconference eight point loss for the Pirates came even with outscoring the Timberwolves 30-28 in the second half.
The opening quarter was a close one with the teams exchanging the lead five times. Goldendale took off to a quick 5-2 in the first two minutes of play. Riverside battled back to take a 6-5 lead. The teams then exchanged the lead until tieing it at 14-14 with 52 seconds to play. The Timberwolves then took the 16-14 at the buzzer. Pirates scoring in the first included Marco Carranza, Gregg Shimer, Erik Ruiz and Taylor Wightman.
Goldendale outscored Riverside in the second quarter 16-8. Pirates scoring in the second quarter were Taylor Wightman, Sean Shimer and Erik Ruiz. Goldendale players Devon Casey and Brady Conway hit treys in the quarter. Goldendale led by 10 at the half, 32-22.
The Riverside increased their scoring in the third quarter but Goldendale still led scoring 16-14. Erik Ruiz hit a trey for the Pirates. Other Riverside players scoring in the third were Sean Shimer, Marco Carranza and Victor Gonzalez. Devon Casey hit back to back treys around the six minute mark for Goldendale. Brady Conway also hit a trey for the Timberwolves. Goldendale led 48-36 at the end of the third quarter.
The Riverside Pirates outscored Goldendale 16-12 in the fourth quarter. That scoring run by Riverside cut the Timberwolves lead to eight. But that wasn't enough to win the game. Scoring in the fourth for Riverside were Marco Carranza, Sean Shimer, Omar Murillo, and Gregg Shimer. Marco Carranza worked some magic along the baseline hitting two shots. Sean Shimer scored eight points in the fourth - a trey and five freethrows. Timberwolves scoring in the fourth included Lucas Denney with three, Brady Conway with seven and Michael Falkner. Goldendale won the game 60-52.
