HERMISTON - The Hermiston Lady Bulldogs defeated the Pendleton Bucks 65-38 on Friday, January 13, 2012. The Bucks led at the end of the first quarter 12-9 then only scored nine points in the second and third quarters. The cold shooting and strong defense by the Bulldogs allowed Hermiston to take a 30 point lead at the end of the third quarter.
The first quarter, like so many starting minutes of basketball games, was a back and forth game as the teams found their rhythm. Hermiston scored first on a free throw by Maloree Moss. Then the teams exchanged the lead until Heidi Walchli hit a trey to give Hermiston the 7-2 lead. Hermiston held the lead until Nancy Rosas of Pendleton hit a jumper with 35 seconds to go in the first to take the 11-9 lead. Courtney Schumacher-Sweek capped the first off for the Bucks by hitting a free throw and giving Pendleton the 12-9 lead.
The Bulldogs exploded for 28 points in the second quarter compared to 5 for Pendleton. Scoring for Hermiston in the second were Maloree Moss and Andrea Waters each scored 11 points. Andrea Waters hit three treys including back to backs within 15 seconds late in the second. Also scoring for the Dawgs were Gracie Flyg and Callahan Crossley. Hermiston led 37-17 at the half.
Hermiston out scored Pendleton 14-4 in the third quarter. Dawgs scoring in the third were Heidi Walchli, Maloree Moss, Haley Foley and Gracie Flyg. Hermisotn led at the end of the third by 30 points, 51-21.
Pendleton out scored Hermiston 17-14 in the fourth quarter but it only chipped away slightly at the Dawgs dominent lead. Scoring for Pendleton in the fourth were Rayne Spencer, Courtney Schumacher-Sweek, Charmayne Robinson, Brittany Gergerson and Nancy Rosas. Scoring for the Dawgs in the fourth were Maloree Moss, Gracie Flyg, Marissa Crowe, Cheyanne Lawson, McKenzie Byrd and Tavin Headings. Hermiston won the game 65-38.
