STANFIELD - The 3A Riverside Pirates defeated the 2A Stanfield Tigers 3 sets to 2 by scores of 26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25 and 15-13 on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. It was a tightly contested well played match that started off a little slow due to early season play.

The teams tied or exchanged the lead seven times in the course of the first set. There were no long runs of serve in the first set by either team. The biggest lead by either team was when Riverside led by four, 17-13 at the midway point. Stanfield battled back to tie it up at 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24. Gabrielle Ganvoa ended up serving out the set for Riverside as the Pirates won 26-24.

Stanfield took command of the game early on leading at one point by seven, 11-3. The teams tied five times in the second set. Part of that run came when Megan Bailey had a seven point run of serve which included two service winners. Riverside battled back chipping away at the Tigers' lead until they tied it up 17-17. The teams battled back and forth until they were tied at 22-22. Justyce Smith then served during the Pirates three point run to the set win. Smith's serving included an ace. Riverside won 25-22.

Stanfield did not let Riverside's 2-0 lead get them down. There were only three ties in score with the last tie at 13-13. That was when Alisen Neasham of Stanfield rotated to serve and the Tigers ran off nine points to take a 23-12 lead. From that point Stanfield cruised on to a 25-17 third set win.

Whatever rust the teams had in the opening set was long gone by the fourth set as the play of both teams was tighter, the teamwork more polished. The teams exchanged the lead eight times during the set. The last tie was at 20-20. Megan Bailey served for Stanfield as the Tigers took a 24-20 lead. Marissa Pratt served up two aces in a row for Riverside then served a it long to provide the set win to Stanfield. The Tigers won the fourth set 25-23.

The exciting match all came down to the first to 15 fifth set. It was back and forth with the teams tied at 10-10 and again at 12-12. Both teams dug in and it was Riverside gritting out the win with serves by Gabrielle Ganvoa and nice shots. Riverside won the fifth set 15-13.
