Irrigon Knights Defeated Riverside Pirates In Football

IRRIGON - The 2A Irrigon Knights defeated the 3A Riverside Pirates 26-18 on Friday, September 6, 2013. It was the Knights' second win over a 3A in as many weeks in the early part of the fall football season. The evening was cool with the temperature at game time around 72 degrees the day after a major thunderstorm had moved through the area.

Picking up action at the start of the second half with Irrigon leading 12-0. Felipe Olvera of Riverside took the opening kick off and ran it back around 80 yards for touchdown. The two point conversion was missed cutting the Irrigon lead to 12-6.

The next scoring drive began for the Knights with about 7:40 to go in the third. The seven plays took just over two minutes leading to one yard run for a touchdown. The two point conversion was on a successful run by Fredy Vera. Irrigon led 20-6.

After the teams exchanged possession of the ball Riverside had the ball with 2:42 to go in the third quarter. Riverside had the ball 2nd & 10 on their own 34 yard line. Riverside's Shimer threw a pass over the middle that was picked off my Fredy Vera and ran back for a Knights' touchdown. The two point conversion was not good giving Irrigon the 26-6 lead.

Riverside started off the fourth quarter with a six play touchdown drive. The Pirates were 4th and 8 on the 9 yard line when Shimer threw a pass to Arik Corpus for a touchdown. Riverside missed the two point conversion but Irrigon led by 14, 26-12 with 8:54 to go in the game.

The next scoring drive began for Riverside 2:54 to go in the game when Irrigon gave up the ball on downs. The seven play drive had eight runs and three passes including the 49 yard pass from Shimer to Gavin Roberts for a touchdown. The two point conversion was not good. The touchdown cut Irrigon's lead to 8, 26-18.

Irrigon took kickoff with 1:41 to go in the game. The Knights moved the ball and worked time off the clock in the closing minutes of the game. When the buzzer sounded Irrigon won 26-18.
