HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs defeated the Pendleton Bucks in a tough, back and forth battle in volleyball on Thursday, September 26, 2013. The Dawgs won 3 games to 2 with scores of 6-25, 25-18, 23-25, 27-25 and 15-13.
The first game was a good one for Pendleton. It didn't take long for the Bucks to take the 11-2 lead on a strong run of serve by Darian Lindsey and Shelby Harris. The Bucks had strong serves and plays at the net to take the first game 25-6.
The second game was a dramatic turn around by the Dawgs. Hermiston had improved serves, passing and play at the net. The first three quarters of the second game was very competitive with the teams tied or exchanging the lead 14 times. Kim Nevil, Noe Ena, and Bethanie Nelson had big kills at the net. Hermiston took control of the second game with the teams tied at 17 and Noe Ena began serving for the Dawgs. The Dawgs scored six points during Ena's run of serve to take the 23-17 lead. Strong play at the net including several kills gave the Hermiston the 25-18 second game win.
The third game was even harder fought than the second game with the teams tied or exchanging the lead 26 times all the way to 23-23. Big plays for the Dawgs came from Brea Kestler and Noa Ena. Darian Lindsey served out for the Bucks when Pendleton took the ball on a side out at 23-23. Pendleton took game three 25-23.
Hermiston had to come from behind in the fourth game to take the game. Pendleton started off fast to take a 6-0 lead. Hermiston battled back, chipping away at the Bucks' lead until they finally tied it up at 15-15. The Bucks and Dawgs then tied or exchanged the lead eight times with strong play from the front lines. With the teams tied at 25-25 Bethanie Nelson served for Hermiston and the Dawgs got a big shot of momentum with a kill by Noe Ena. Hermiston took game four 27-25.
With the teams tied at 2-2 the match moved on to the decisive fifth game. The game was hard played with the teams tied or exchanging the lead 10 times. Hermiston had a number of big plays including blocks, kills and tips. Hannah Mabbott had a big block early in the game. The teams were tied 13-13 when Pendleton smashed a shot into the net giving Hermiston the 14-13 lead. Brea Kestler then served for the Dawgs. During the volley of hits Noe Ena made a huge block at the net that game Hermiston the 15-13 fifth game win and overall match win of 3-2.
