STANFIELD - It was a battle of undefeated teams when the 2A powerhouses Irrigon Knights and Stanfeild Tigers met on Friday, January 10, 2014. It was a big game with high interest beyond the Stanfield High School Gym. KEPR TV had a pregame report on their nightly news and coverage of the game on the late news. An indicator of spectator interest was visible in that the main parking lots were full forcing people to find parking as far away as the middle school.
The Irrigon Knights won the game 63-51. It was a game that had a defensive undertone by Stanfield that clashed with the fast paced Irrigon play. Once Irrigon took the 7-5 lead early in the first period the Knights never gave up the lead for the rest of the game.
Stanfield scored first 15 seconds into the game on a lay up by Adrian Angel. Moments later Bryce Linker hit a free throw to give Stanfield the 3-0 lead. Irrigon's Anthony Landeros tied it up with a trey at 6:45. Linker responded for Stanfield with a jumper to give the Tigers' the 5-3 lead. Ryan Reynolds followed up a shot to tie the game at 5-5 at 5:40. Twenty seconds later Reynolds scored again for the Knights on a baseline drive to give Irrigon the 7-5. Stanfield Tigers scoring during the rest of the first period included Milan Davchevski, Hunter Braithwaite and Elvis Lockwood. Knights scoring in the first included Ernesto Aguilera and Adrian Romero. Irrigon led by five at the end of the first period, 19-14.
Irrigon out scored Stanfield 17-10 in the second period to take a 12 point lead at halftime. Scoring for Stanfield in the second included Milan Cavchevski, Adrian Angel, Bryce Linker and Hunter Braithwaite. Knights scoring in the second included Adrian Romero who hit two treys, Zach Rice and Eric Vera. Irrigon led Stanfield at halftime 36-24.
The teams scored 17 points each in the third period. Stanfield scoring came from Adrian Angel, Hunter Braithwaite, Joseph Valadez, Dylan Grogan and Milan Davchevski. Knights scoring in the third included Athony Landeros, Adrian Romero, Ryan Reynolds and Ernesto Aguilera. Irrigon led by 12 at the end of the third, 53-41.
The teams each scored 10 points in the fourth period. Scoring for the Tigers in the fourth came from Bryce Linker, Adrian Angel and Hunter Braithwaite. The Knights scoring in the fourth included Anthony Landeros and Zach Rice. Irrigon won by 12 points, 63-51 and kept their undefeated record in tact.
