BOARDMAN - The Imbler Panthers won their fifth straight Riverside Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 6, 2014. The day long event included teams from Riverside, Umatilla, Irrigon, Stanfield, Milton-Freewater, Imbler, Helix Griswold and Elgin.
There was plenty of action over the long day as teams played simultaneously on side by side courts. All the matches were best of three.
For so early in the season the teams seemed to be working well together on their plays. As the day went on Imbler, Helix & Elgin were racking up the wins on the way to the final in the evening.
Helix and Imbler met in the final at 6:40 PM PT. The teams tied or exchanged the lead 11 times in the first half of the set. Imbler then went on a scoring run to take a 17-11 lead. Helix cut Imbler's lead to just four, 18-14 at one point. Imbler then went on a seven point run to win the first set 25-14.
Imbler started off the second set overpowering Helix 13-3. Imbler's serves and play at the net helped to gain the upper hand on Helix. Imbler led 20-7 as the second game went on. Helix scored on a couple of side outs but Imbler just kept up the pressure winning the second set by 16 points, 25-9 to win their fifth Riverside tournamnet in a row.
The Panthers were very excited about the win. Especially the four seniors Maddison Bigej, Darcie Kanoho, Savanna Mullarkey and Emma Bowers who have been there for most of the winning streak. Imbler's fans surrounded their team cheering them in their victory and taking lots of pictures.
