Pilot Rock Defeated Umatilla In OT Football Game

UMATILLA - The Pilot Rock Rockets defeated the Umatilla Vikings 32-26 in an exciting overtime game on Thursday, September 11, 2014. It was a clear evening with the temperature around 70 degrees at the start of the game. The last 1:46 of the first half was extremely exciting with both teams scoring 19 points on three touchdowns.

Umatilla scored first at about the 8 minute mark of the first quarter. The PAT was missed giving the Vikings the 6-0 lead.

The next scoring occurred early in the second quarter. Umatilla fumbled the ball on the first play of the quarter and it was recovered by a Pilot Rock player. Rockets' quarter back Riley Lankford connected on a long pass to put Pilot Rock on the 9 yard line. The Rockets scored on the next play on a run up the middle. The PAT was missed to the left. That tied the score at 6-6 with about 11 minutes to go in the first half.

Umatilla was the next to score with a three play series that started with 6:32 to go in the first half. Albert Guizar scored on a 39 yard run with 5:50 to go. The PAT was good giving Umatilla the 13-6 lead.

Pilot Rock came right back to score on a 12 play drive that chewed up about five minutes. The drive was a mix of runs and passing plays. The touchdown came on a 15 yard pass to the right corner of the endzone. The two point conversion was missed cutting the Umatilla lead to one point, 13-12 with 1:46 to go in the first half.

Pilot Rock kicked off to Umatilla. Umatilla fumbled the pass in the first play and it was recovered by Pilot Rock.

Pilot Rock then put together a six play drive in about a minute's time that led to a touchdown pass to Justin Willingham. The PAT was missed giving Pilot Rock the 18-13 lead with 41 seconds to play in the first half.

Umatilla then scored on a four play series with just 40 seconds to go in the first half. The score came on a quarterback keeper by Jesus Ramirez with 10 seconds to go in the first half. The PAT was good to give Umatilla the 20-18 lead with just seconds to go in the first half.

The teams went scoreless for most of the second half as they exchanged possession of the ball. Finally Umatilla put together a 12 play series that began with 6:35 to go in the half. Finally Albert Guizar scored on a 7 yard run with 1:28 to play in the game. The PAT was blocked. Umatilla led by 8 points, 26-18 with 1:28 to go in the game. Pilot Rock took the kick off and put together a five play drive to score with 32 seconds to go in the game. The Rockets then scored on a two point conversion to tie the game at 26-26 with about a half minute go go.

The clock ran out for Umatilla in their own territory. On to overtime.

Umatilla had first possession in OT but their drive ended on a 4th and 9 on the 13 yard line.

Pilot Rock got their turn to score from the 25 yard line. The Rockets then put together a five play drive that ended in a 17 yeard pass to Angel Corona for the game winning touchdown. Pilot Rock won 32-26.
