HERMISTON - The Hermiston Bulldogs defeated the Hillsboro Spartatns in OSAA 5A state play in match on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. The Dawgs won 3-2 by scores of 25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-9. The gym was only about 1/3rd full for the important match on a cool evening.
Hermiston dominated the first set with strong play to take it by a score of 25-14.
The second set was very competitive with the teams tied or exchanged the lead 18 times. Noe Ena had a strong set with several kills and a nice run of serve. Kynzee Padilla had several nice kills and Briana Wolfe had a couple nice runs of serve. Hillsboro had some nice play at the net and had a couple longer runs of serve. Hermiston's last lead was at 20-18. Then Hillsboro's Sarah Owen rotated to serve following a tip at the net for a score that tied it at 20-20. A kill by Makenna Gambee gave Hillsboro the 21-20 and they held on to take the second set 25-22.
The third set was another battle somewhat like the second. The teams tied or exchanged the lead 14 times. Ena had two kills and Padilla one. Hermiston took the lead at 21-20 then Hillsboro battled back to the lead at 22-21. A strong series of serves by Kaitlynn Vitale of Hillsbor along with kills by Sarah Owen clenched the third set for Hillsboro 25-22.
The third set started slow for the Dawgs with Hillsboro leading 4-1. A couple side outs by Hermiston closed the gap to 3-5 as Noe Ena rotated to serve. A tip by Mikayla Kopacz and two aces by Ena gave Hermiston the 8-6 lead. A lead that the Dawgs didn't give up. Strong runs of serve by Mikayla Kopacz, Brea Kestler and Briana Wolfe helped the Dawgs along. Strong play at the net also helped with Ena hitting two kills and Maddy Juul hitting a kill and two blocks. Hermiston won the second set 25-16 to tie the match at 2-2.
The first to 15 fifth set was back and forth until the mid way point. Hillsboro took an early 4-1 lead. Then strong play by Ena, Ashley Moser and Kynzee Padilla at serve and nice work at the net Hermiston took a 13-8 lead. Kopacz served out for the Dawgs' 3-2; 25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-9 win in the play in match.
