BOARDMAN - The Echo Cougars defeated the Umatilla Vikings in the championship game of the Riverside Volleyball Tournament on Saturday September 5, 2015. The Cougars took the championship match 2-1 with game scores of 24-26, 25-19 and 15-6. It was kind of unusual not to see Imbler or Elgin in the championship game since they've had repeated appearances over the last five or six years.
Umatilla raced out to a 10-4 lead early in the first set. The Vikings then stretched the lead to 15-7 during some long runs of serve. Echo then went on a six point run to tighten things up to just three points at 16-13. The teams fought back and forth with side outs coming with almost every service. Echo closed to two points with Umatilla leading 22-20. It took Umatilla an extra point to win the first set 26-24.
The teams were tied and exchanged the lead at the opening of the second set. Once Echo took the 6-5 lead they never gave it up as they stretched the lead to as much as six on their way to the 25-19 second set win.
Echo dominated the start of the third and decisive set taking a 10-2. Echo didn't give up much with the Vikings only getting three sideouts in the third set. Echo won by nine points 15-6 to win the Riverside volleyball tournament.
