BOARDMAN - The Echo Cougars swept the Riverside Pirates in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday April 5, 2016. The Cougars won game one 8-1 and game two 16-2. It was a mostly sunny afternoon with a slight breeze and the temperature was around 65 degrees.
I walked across the Riverside sports complex from the Pirates hosting Stanfield baseball game to the softball field where it was the top of the fifth inning with Echo leading 7-2. It was a fairly close game at that point. The Cougars scored one more run in the top of the inning to take an 8-2 lead. Riverside went three up and three down in the bottom of the fifth. Cougars led 8-2 at the end of the fifth inning.
The Cougars scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Once on a hit to deep centerfield that drove in a runner from second base. Next came another hit to deep centerfield that scored a runner from third. Riverside went scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning. Echo led 10-2.
Echo scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The first two scores came on runners who got on base and worked their way around with the help of hits. Then the Cougars were able to load the bases which providing scoring opportunities through singles and another walk that forced in a runner. Cougars led 16-2 half way through the seventh inning. Riverside did get a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to score. Echo won 16-2.
